African American Culture

Locals will tell you, Minneapolis Saint Paul is a great place for African Americans to thrive. “If you come here with skills and ambition, you can make it,” says Anthony Taylor, consultant, wellness expert and business owner who moved here to go to college nearly 30 years ago and never left. “All the resources are available for you to create success for you and your family.”

From Gordon Parks to Roy Wilkins, there is a legacy of success among African Americans in Minneapolis Saint Paul. These local pioneers lived here, yet made national impact. Their work laid a fertile soil for those who come after them. Here, you are accepted on your merit, not status: work hard and you will succeed.

Social networks abound – in the black community and beyond. And while still relatively small, Minnesota's African American population is growing 5 times faster than the nation's African American population as a whole. It’s projected to rise 64% between 2000 and 2015.

A cultural openness permeates Minneapolis Saint Paul. Here, a balanced life is easy to achieve, with plentiful job opportunities, outlets for healthy living, quality education and family resources. All this in a safe, accepting urban environment where variety is definitely the spice of life.
