Family and Child Enrichment
The heart of Hispanic culture is found in the family. Some organizations that serve children and families include:
  • Centro Multifaceted social service agency serving the Hispanic community. Centro’s Early Childhood Education Readiness Program prepares children ages 3-5 for kindergarten by providing parents with culturally appropriate activities and learning opportunities. Centro’s Youth Development Program provides Latino teens a mix of cultural, educational, health, leadership and family activities.
  • La Escuelita – Provides after-school and summer academic enrichment programs and leadership development for Hispanic students enrolled in grades 6-12 in Minneapolis schools. The program arranges visits to leaders in the Latino community, participates as a group at community events, and visits private businesses and recreational areas.
  • Siembra Early Childhood Education Center – This bilingual program serves children ages 32 months to 5 years. It has a three-year bilingual curriculum which prepares children for kindergarten while helping them to acquire a second language without losing their primary language. This culturally based program provides a comprehensive early childhood education which helps its students to develop their emotional, social, cognitive and physical levels.
  • Discapacitados AbriĆ©ndose Caminos Created in response to the need for Spanish-language materials and services for Latino families with special education needs in Minneapolis Saint Paul. It provides home visits, sight translation of documents, and referrals to other community resources, as well as information interpretation services, a 24-hour hotline, orientation for Spanish-speaking families with physically or mentally challenged children as well as for service providers, a family support group, and mediation and advocacy for Hispanic families in the school system.
  • Ready 4 K – Assuring that every young child in Minnesota enters kindergarten encouraged, supported and fully prepared for learning success.
  • Hispanic Pre-College Project – Founded by the University of Saint Thomas, this project offers four programs: Academia del Pueblo (serves Latino 1-5 graders), Project Success (serves Latino 6-8 graders), High School Teaching Assistant Mentoring Initiative and Parents as Partners. Academia Cesar Chavez, a charter school located in Saint Paul is an outgrowth of the University’s Hispanic Pre-College Project.
  • Proyecto Para Menores – Sponsored by Centro Legal, Inc., a community law firm providing affordable, quality, bilingual/bicultural legal representation, education and advocacy to Minnesota Hispanics, Proyecto Para Menores works to prevent child abuse and neglect in the Hispanic community and to advocate for the preservation of the rights of Hispanic children.
  • Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio – Latino Learning Institute offers year-round day or evening classes to Hispanic students, adults and elders that are culturally and linguistically sensitive, and accommodate various learning styles and levels of education.  
Career Development
  • Centro – Multifaceted social service agency serving the Hispanic community. The Employment Program works with newly graduated Chicano and Latino undergraduate and graduate students for career placement.
  • Latino Economic Development Center – Programs designed to provide assistance in different areas of entrepreneurial activity, from writing a business plan, to making a real estate purchase.
  • Hispanic Chamber of Commerce – Community and economic development organization that provides training, technical assistance, workforce development, homeownership counseling, financial literacy and other resources to Hispanic individuals and entrepreneurs.
  • Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association – Dedicated to advancing the interests of Hispanic attorneys and law students in Minnesota.
  • Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio – Offers employment services designed to identify and address a variety of barriers that prevent the Hispanic job seeker from obtaining and retaining meaningful employment.
