Basketball
Home of the original Lakers, Minnesota is no stranger to basketball dominance. Professional basketball made a triumphant return to the City of Lakes when the Timberwolves began their first season in 1989.
The Lynx, Minnesota’s WNBA team, tipped off their inaugural season in 1999 with 12,000 fans in attendance to watch the first regular-season game against Detroit at Target Center, and they haven’t looked back.
Football
16-time division champions, the Minnesota Vikings have a frenzied following. Tailgating is tradition, come early and come purple. Vikings fans do it up in serious style.
Hockey
Sports Illustrated christened Saint Paul Hockeytown U.S.A. Home of the Minnesota Wild. A team playing to sold-out crowds at Xcel Energy Center since 2000, season tickets are capped at 16,500 with a waiting list of more than 7,000.
Soccer
Founded in 1990 as an amateur men’s soccer team, the Minnesota Thunder went professional in 1994, currently playing in the 12-team First Division.
The Lightning, Minnesota’s professional women’s soccer team, played its first season in 2006. Since then, the Lightning have earned a loyal following and made an impression on the US W-League, one shutdown at a time.
Lacrosse
Lacrosse is one of the world’s fastest growing sports, and Minnesota is ahead of the curve with a world-class team, the Minnesota Swarm.
